Do I need to use sunscreen for dogs?

Is sunscreen for dogs mandatory?

It is true that sunscreen for dogs is necessary, but it is not always essential. It primarily depends on the dog's breed, its coat, its skin, and the time it spends in the sun.

When should I use sunscreen for dogs?

Its use is recommended primarily for:

  • dogs with light skin and/or thin fur
  • dogs with pink noses or ears, which are more exposed to UV rays
  • dogs that spend a lot of time outside, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • dogs with shaved fur (e.g., after surgery, during summer clipping, or breeds like the Chinese Crested)

When is it not necessary?

Use is not necessary if the dog has a thick, dark coat and does not spend much time in direct sunlight. Similarly, it is not required for the aforementioned dogs if they are not outside for long periods during the strongest sunlight.

What should I look for when buying sunscreen?

When buying sunscreen for dogs, you must ensure that the product is intended for dogs. Sunscreens for humans can contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs.

Our Solar sunscreen for dogs, with a high SPF 50 protection factor, is specifically for dogs and also for cats.

Tips for hot summer days

Believe me, if it’s hot for you, you know how hot it is for your furry friend! That is why you should make sure they are comfortable during the summer as well.

  • Avoid the heat in the middle of the day (plan longer walks for early in the morning or in the evening). Hot ground can cause burns or other injuries to dog paws, so we recommend using PawTection balm.
  • Provide shade and cooling. You can help them cool down by using a cooling mat or a cooling disk.
  • Never leave your dog in the car, even if you are just running into the store for 5 minutes.
  • Treat your dog friend to a summer snack you can prepare yourself – Smoofl dog ice cream in various flavors or get a starter kit. Preparation is child's play.
  • Make sure the dog always has access to clean and fresh water – at home and on the go. When on trips or out and about, carry a travel bowl, e.g., Beco or P.L.AY.
  • If the dog swims in the sea, it shouldn't last long (to prevent them from drinking too much salt water). After swimming in the sea, rinse them off with fresh water as soon as possible.

You can find all products under the Summer section.

Have a safe and happy summer!
