CBD DROPS FOR DOGS: How they can help resolve 4 most common health issues
CBD for dogs
CBD is one of more than 140 cannabinoids in hemp that is not psychoactive—meaning neither we nor our dog gets high from it. That is because CBD is not the same as THC. There is a crazy amount of terms and explanations associated with CBD that we ourselves weren't familiar with, so we are offering a short explanation below. If you aren't interested, just scroll down to the chapter 4 most common problems that CBD alleviates, and thus also CBD drops for dogs.
What are cannabinoids?
These are compounds that bind to cannabinoid receptors. In our bodies and those of our dogs, there are 2 main cannabinoid receptors called CB-1 (located in the brain) and CB-2 (located in the regulatory cells of the immune system).
Basically, we divide them into three groups based on their origin:
- endocannabinoids: produced by every human and are part of our endocannabinoid system,
- phytocannabinoids: found in some plants, especially hemp,
- synthetic cannabinoids: created in laboratories through chemical reactions.
A cannabinoid that has proven particularly effective in medical circles is cannabidiol or CBD. CBD drops for dogs are therefore even more highly recommended.
How does CBD work?
CBD acts on CB2 receptors, especially in the peripheral nervous system and immune system cells. In recent years, this has been the most intensively studied cannabinoid, as it shows excellent results for various ailments, although other cannabinoids (CBN, CBG, CBC…) also show exceptional potential. In industrial hemp varieties, the CBD content is very high, while the THC (psychoactive) content is almost non-existent.
CBD and other cannabinoids have a broad spectrum of medicinal properties (based on a 2013 study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology)
- Antiemetic (prevents vomiting)
- Prevents inflammation problems
- Relieves nausea and other stomach problems
- Prevents psychosis disorders
- Anticonvulsant (prevents or alleviates epileptic seizures)
- Antioxidant
- Antipsychotic (alleviates psychotic disorders)
- Boosts the immune system
- Relieves symptoms of Parkinson's disease
- Acts against neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease)
- Acts against the formation and spread of tumors or cancer
- Anxiolytic/antidepressant (alleviates mental disorders)

4 most common problems that CBD drops for dogs alleviate
As you probably already suspect, CBD drops for dogs are truly super healing. Below, we have highlighted 5 of the most common problems for which owners choose treatment with CBD. Of course, these are not the only ones.
1. Relieves pain and inflammation
Pain can be a symptom of many health conditions. Inflammation (acute, not chronic) is a healing process that can actually increase pain. CBD drops for dogs can interrupt the signals that tell a dog's brain that the dog is in pain.
It doesn't just interrupt the "signals," but can actually reduce the inflammation causing the pain.
A list of some common health problems that cause pain in dogs and where CBD has proven very effective:
- Arthritis
- Hip dysplasia
- Cancerous diseases
- Injured ligaments
- Joint sprains
- Post-surgical recovery
2. Cancerous diseases
For symptoms of cancer and tumors, CBD drops for dogs not only help by alleviating pain, but also assist with the nausea and vomiting caused by classic treatments. It is a natural antiemetic (anti-vomiting agent).
No one dares claim that CBD is a 100% cure for cancer. However, early studies are quite promising, as CBD slows down tumor growth, and cancer cells become more susceptible to treatment.
3. Anxiety and stress
Does your dog have separation anxiety? You know, they aren't the only one. And you are definitely not the only one dealing with anxiety and stress. For Mo, for example, firecracker bangs cause stress; Hani is afraid of thunder. For some dogs, even car rides are a source of stress…
How do you know if your dog is under stress? Some signs:
- Refusing food and having a poor appetite
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Changes in behavior (may withdraw from physical contact, become aggressive, etc.)
- Rapid breathing, trembling, and some even obsessively lick themselves
CBD can help calm and reduce stress or feelings of anxiety in dogs.
4. Allergies and coat problems
If a dog licks and scratches itself a lot, this is in most cases a sign of allergy problems. Dogs can have allergies to bites, environmental allergens (atopic dermatitis), and food allergies.
There are various treatments currently available, but unfortunately, most skin allergies are difficult to eliminate. Usually, we focus on reducing or eliminating symptoms rather than the allergy itself.
Proven by studies, CBD drops for dogs can help soothe itchy and dry skin. It also encourages hair growth and skin health. The resin can be applied directly to the problematic areas.
What is even better is that with CBD, some allergies can even be eliminated.
Matej Uršič from the portal www.konopljazdravi.si added his 4 favorite effects of CBD on dogs to the 4 points above.
5. Arthritis
One of the most important studies that dog owners should know about regarding arthritis was conducted in 2018 by the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.
The dogs in the study were evaluated before the start of the trial and then after two and four weeks of treatment. The researchers found that a dose of 2 mg of CBD per kilogram effectively reduced visible signs of pain in dogs and, above all, significantly improved their activity and mobility.
6. Epilepsy
It has been shown that full-spectrum CBD resin works well for epileptic seizures. It contributes to less intense and less frequent seizures.
7. Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
CBD resin can help dogs manage IBD when conventional treatment fails or needs some extra help. CBD resin is an excellent supplement that also helps the dog cope with the side effects of medications.
CBD works because humans and dogs have an endocannabinoid system that is constantly producing small amounts of its own cannabinoids (not CBD and THC). A deficiency in these can cause certain diseases, including IBD.
CBD drops for dogs can help dogs in this situation because it has strong anti-inflammatory properties, helps with appetite, relieves stress and pain, supports the immune system, and provides additional nutrients.
For dogs that must take medication, CBD can help reduce the unwanted side effects of traditional drugs—the side effects that make them feel weak, lead to poor appetite, depression, diarrhea, and a weakened immune system.
8. Heart disease
It can happen that dogs encounter one of the heart diseases during their lifetime. The first of these is the thickening and degradation of heart valves. Then there are parasitic diseases—these multiply in the dog's vascular system and obstruct the functioning of the heart and larger blood vessels.
Myocardial disease, canine heart arrhythmias, pericardial disease, progressive heart failure, etc., can also occur.
CBD oil can help dogs with heart disease by reducing inflammation, calming anxiety, reducing the frequency and severity of attacks, protecting the heart against arrhythmias and heart attacks, and helping with sleep and a better appetite.
Dosage
In the initial phase, this should be done in lower doses. The rule is that less is more here. Namely, it can very quickly happen that we overdose an inexperienced dog that is not accustomed to cannabinoids. Therefore, it is wise to follow initial doses and then gradually increase them later.
You don't have to stick to them strictly; they are just a guideline for a trouble-free start. It is likely good to exceed them for some illnesses. In some cases, it is necessary to increase the dose sevenfold, and in extreme cases of pain and cancer, even up to thirty times or more.
It is good to start towards the evening after a walk so that, in an extreme case, the dog can just fall asleep. You need to observe them and note how they behave after an hour, or maybe even sooner.
The initial dose can be increased every four days by the smallest unit that you manage to measure with the CBD resin. The dog should not be sleepy, except in more severe cases where it is necessary for them to sleep.
The dose can be used 3 times a day, but more is not recommended because the CBD from previous doses is still taking effect.
You can read more precisely about the dosage of suitable CBD resin for dogs (45% CBD) – how to start – below.
For dogs of smaller breeds (up to 10 kg), for alleviating minor problems, we recommend a dosage of approx. 1 mm or the size of a grain of rice once daily; in cases of more severe illness or recovery, we add CBD twice daily.
For dogs of medium breeds (from 10 – 25 kg), for alleviating minor problems, we recommend a dosage of approx. 1.5 mm or the size of a large grain of rice once daily; in cases of more severe illness or recovery, we add CBD 2-3 times daily.
For dogs of larger breeds (over 25 kg), for alleviating minor problems, we recommend a dosage of approx. 2 mm or the size of a drop once daily; in cases of more severe illness or recovery, we add CBD 2-3 times daily.
Some results will only begin to show after a period of two months, so it is recommended to persist for at least that long.
We recommend squeezing the amount of CBD resin onto a treat for the dog.
