Toy Poodle – a small dog with a big personality

small, smart and always elegant – that's the toy poodle

Toy poodles are not just cute furry friends – they are one of the smartest and most popular dog breeds in the world! Due to their gentle nature, manageable size, and non-allergenic coat, they are ideal for apartment living, as well as for families, individuals, and seniors.

If you are a toy poodle owner or are thinking about becoming one, you are in the right place! 👇

Why are toy poodles so special?

  • Extremely intelligent – they learn tricks and commands quickly
  • Very loyal and attached to their owner
  • Hypoallergenic coat – ideal for people with allergies
  • Small, but active – they need play, walks, and challenges

General breed characteristics

Poodles originated in Germany, but today most people associate them with France, where they became a symbol of elegance and aristocracy. The toy poodle is the smallest variety of this breed.

Toy poodles were bred specifically as companion dogs – that is, with the purpose of being around people, rather than as working dogs. Despite their small size, they are not "ornaments," but fully functional, energetic, and extremely intelligent furry friends.

The toy poodle is the tiniest member of the poodle family:

  • Height: up to 28 cm
  • Weight: 2.5 kg – 4.5 kg
  • Lifespan: 12 – 16 years
  • Colors: black, white, brown, apricot, red, cream

Character and behavior

The toy poodle is not just a “pretty” dog, but one of the smartest of all breeds. It ranks very high in intelligence – often 2nd place, right after the Border Collie.

  • Very intelligent and trainable
  • Loyal and attached to its owner
  • Alert and attentive, suitable as a small watchdog 🙂
  • Playful and curious
  • Can become possessive or sensitive if not raised correctly

Toy poodles love to learn and collaborate with people, which means they really enjoy tricks, interactive toys, dog school, or even sports like dog agility.

The toy poodle is suitable for apartment living. Due to its size and friendly nature, it is ideal for living in an apartment. However, this is not a breed for sitting in your lap and resting all day. Toy poodles need regular physical and mental activity – otherwise, they can become nervous, barky, or even destructive.

For keeping your toy poodle busy, the Pawzler toy is suitable. You can also keep them occupied by throwing sticks and balls.

This dog is very sociable and gets along well with children and other animals. It also likes strangers, which makes it easy to integrate into various social environments.

Care and Hygiene

One of the biggest advantages of the toy poodle is that it does not shed, which is why it is often recommended for people with mild allergies.

However, this advantage does not mean it requires no care and hygiene.

Care includes:

  • Regular brushing (at least 3–4 times a week)
  • Grooming every 4–6 weeks (can be done at home or at a professional groomer)
  • Cleaning ears, as they are prone to infections
  • Regular teeth brushing, as they have a small jaw and are susceptible to dental diseases
  • Bathing as needed (with gentle, dog-safe shampoos)

Feeding

Toy poodles have small stomachs but high metabolisms, so it is important to provide them with high-quality, easily digestible food that is rich in protein and nutrients. The food should be formulated for small breeds.

You must be careful not to let them become overweight, as they are susceptible to weight gain, which can exacerbate joint problems.

Health

Despite their long lifespan, toy poodles can be prone to certain issues:

  • Patellar luxation (dislocation of the kneecap)
  • Teeth and gum problems (tartar buildup)
  • Eye diseases, such as progressive retinal atrophy
  • Ear infections
  • Epilepsy
  • Allergies and skin problems

Regular veterinary check-ups and preventative care are crucial for a long and healthy life.
